Recreational Opportunities in Northeastern Tennessee

The natural beauty of Northeast Tennessee creates an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities. Hiking, camping, hunting, boating, skiing, golfing, and many other sports can all be enjoyed in an uncrowded atmosphere.


Much of Northeast Tennessee lies within national forest boundaries, providing excellent hunting, fishing, and hiking opportunities. There are also several TVA lakes in the area to enjoy, and the Appalachian Trail passes through the area. The Roan Mountain State Park encompasses the world’s largest rhododendron gardens—over 600 acres of pure beauty atop Roan Mountain. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Pigeon Forge are just a short drive away.

The highest ski resorts in the eastern United States are located just across Interstate 26 at the Tennessee/North Carolina state line. Also, the Blue Ridge Parkway runs through this area offering breathtaking views of the mountains.

Some of the most outstanding entertainment is available in Northeast Tennessee as Bristol is the home of the famous Bristol Motor Speedway and NASCAR races. Country and bluegrass music is available throughout the area with Bristol becoming known as the birthplace of country music, and the famous Carter Fold is just a short drive away across the state line in Virginia.

There are many theaters (including Barter Theater) nearby along with museums, historical mansions, outdoor dramas, dance theaters, ongoing festivals, concerts, baseball, and football games. The area is centrally located and airport accessible, and it is never too far from anything your heart desires when you live in Northeast Tennessee.
